How Do I Use Resistance Bands?

Looking to bring some stretch and resistance into your workout routine? There are plenty of resistance band workouts for beginners and pros alike. Whether you’re an experienced athlete or are just getting into fitness, check out our top tips for exercise band workouts. They just might help bring your performance to the next level:

Choose the Right Bands

So, you want to master a form of equipment-based exercise. The first thing you need to do is invest in the right piece of equipment. In the case of fitness band exercises, this is a very affordable investment—phew! It’s also not too hard to come by; most athletic supply shops and providers will have many options for you.

There are several types of fitness bands, and most athletes find that they have a preference. The main varieties are:

– Handled Bands

This is one of the more distinct types of resistance band—it is long, and the band itself is in the shape of a tube. Each end sports a handle typically made of plastic or sometimes nylon. Handled bands are great for upper-body workouts.

– Loops

Also called “large loop bands” or “superbands,” these are characterized by their closed circular shape. Although there are variations, loop bands are generally flat, like a giant rubber band. Lots of athletes use loops for pull-ups.

– Mini Loops

A mini loop is exactly that—a tiny version of a superband! As with their larger counterpart, mini loops are available in varying levels of fitness.  Lots of athletes use them to work their glutes, but like all resistance bands, you can use mini loops for numerous exercises.

– Figure Eights

To infinity and beyond! A figure-eight-shaped fitness band is easy to grip and sometimes has built-in handles. We love using them when we’re working our upper body.

– Therapy Bands

As the name suggests, these unlooped bands are often used for rehabilitative or therapeutic purposes. However, that’s not their only use—many athletes like using therapy bands for workouts like barre exercise.

Make Sure Your Form is Correct

At Jack City, we talk about proper form a lot—it’s essential to a safe and effective workout! It’s crucial to make sure that you are performing your resistance exercises correctly. A dedicated fitness coach will be able to help you with that!

Try a Resistance Band Warm-Up

A proper warm-up is crucial to a safe workout that delivers results—and there are many ways to do it. If you’re currently experiencing a fitness band obsession, you’re in luck. This nifty piece of equipment can be a fantastic tool for several dynamic warm-up exercises.

Curious? Try a banded squat or deadlift before your next workout! Your muscles will be primed and ready for whatever you have planned for them.

Activate Those Muscles!

Here’s an insider tip from our coaches: when you’re performing your fitness band exercises, be sure to engage and activate your muscles. Let’s say you’re performing a banded crossover fly—nice. To make the most out of your workout, be sure to squeeze your pectoral muscles whilst you go…and don’t forget to breathe!

Try for Some Higher Reps

Many athletes like to use resistance bands because unlike heavy weights, they allow for higher reps and longer workouts. Try it yourself— it’s possible to increase your rep count in increments if that’s easier for you.

Utilize Your Surroundings

One of the best things about resistance bands is their flexibility—and we don’t just mean their amazing elasticity and ability to stretch! Even the biggest resistance bands are lightweight, portable, and easy to store—and they can easily adapt to their environment or surroundings.

If you’re hoping to sneak a resistance band workout into your lunch break at the office, you totally can; we’ve seen them used on doors or poles. This is great for sunny days as well. We know plenty of folks who use resistance bands to bring their workout outdoors—they can easily be wrapped around trees!

Don’t Forget: Posture Matters

Is there any case where good posture isn’t an asset? Despite its many benefits, though, most of us still find ourselves hunched over a desk from time to time. Sometimes, this incorrect posture makes its way into a workout—and we don’t want that. In fact, in terms of nailing certain workouts, like fitness band exercises, employing proper posture will improve your workout’s overall effectiveness.

If you’re concerned about your posture, speak to your fitness coach! They will be able to help you develop some posture-correcting routines to practice.

Bring Your Workout on the Go!

Whether you’re heading on a three-day vacation or packing it up for six months on the road, a resistance band is your ultimate travel companion. After all, most of us don’t want to abandon our fitness routine just because we’re not at home.

This piece of equipment is so incredibly portable and versatile, you can use it anywhere from your hotel room to the airport terminal. With so many varieties of resistance band workouts out there, you’ll be able to create an entire workout without looking for a temporary gym option or stuffing bulky equipment into your suitcase.
