What is Functional Strength?

The term “functional fitness” has been appearing all over exercise communities, but plenty of people are still hazy on the concept. Functional fitness training programs are gaining such popularity because they are designed for everybody. The strength and conditioning training that one practices in a functional workout applies to many facets of life. This includes more expected ways, like the gym or the playing field, but also translates to everyday life. Have you ever pulled a muscle from sneezing? Pulled your knee while walking the dog? Everyday activities really do require more strength than you might have considered— and functional fitness training is the way to ensure you’re in the right shape for whatever life throws your way, whether that’s running a marathon or changing a flat tire.

What is a Functional Workout?

Since functional strength and conditioning training is used to prepare an individual for all kinds of physical activity, it focuses on movements they are likely to use in their daily lives. At Jack City Fitness, our version of these strength and conditioning classes use basic functional movements including the Hinge, Squat, Push, Pull, and Carries. If you love super-sets, tri-sets, and circuits, this high-paced class is the place for you. If you don’t— well, you might find that’s about the change!
